The Right Cleaning Methods to Use to Care for Your Teeth and Gums

Posted February 8, 2017.

Would you like to know how to properly clean and care for your teeth and gums? If so, our Madden Dental dental team is happy to help you! There are specific steps you need to take in order to keep your oral health in tip-top shape. Those steps are:Brushing

Step 1: Make sure you have the best tools possible, like a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. The brush will thoroughly clean your smile and care for your gums while the fluoride will penetrate your tooth enamel and strengthen your teeth.

Step 2: Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline and use just enough pressure to feel the bristles against your gums and between your teeth. Make sure you don’t squish the bristles.

Step 3: Now, use a gentle circular motion to scrub the inner, outer, and top surfaces of each tooth. Make sure you scrub every tooth in your smile and you do so for two minutes twice each day.

Step 4: After you’re done scrubbing your chompers, brush your tongue to remove the bacteria and provide a clean, fresh breath.

Flossing

Step 1: You can start your flossing routine by grabbing about 18 inches of floss. Then, wrap most of the floss around one of your middle fingers. Next, wrap the rest of the floss around the same finger on the other hand. Make sure you have about one inch of floss between each index finger. Try not to allow any slack.

Step 2: Take that inch of floss and clean between two of your teeth. To place the floss in the crevice, use a gentle sawing motion. Then, use the floss to scrape the sides of each tooth, removing the plaque and food particles that reside there.

Step 3: When you get to the gumline, curve the floss into a “C” shape. Then, gently send the floss between the gumline and the bottom of the tooth. This will help reduce your chances of falling victim to gum disease.

Step 4: Once you are done cleaning along the gumline, remove the floss from the crevice between the teeth and move onto the next space. However, as you move from tooth to tooth, make sure you use a clean section of floss. It’s important to floss at least once a day.
