Dental emergencies are not fun. In fact, they’re quite scary and overwhelming. If possible, it’s best to avoid them as much as possible. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Karisha Madden, is happy to give you some tips and information on how to avoid chipping a tooth.

The first tip is to watch your step. If you’re someone who tends to fall or trip a lot, then it’s important to be careful as you walk. You don’t want to trip, fall, and hit your mouth on the concrete. This also goes for bikers. If you ride your bike often, watch out for those pot holes. Flying over your handlebars head first can result in serious injury.

The second tip is to avoid food mishaps. This means you should avoid hard-to-chew foods. Oftentimes we eat a popcorn kernel, ice, or even hard candies and accidentally put so much pressure on the teeth when biting that it fractures the enamel. It’s best to avoid these tough foods and also avoid chewing on things like pens, pencils, and pens.

The third tip is to avoid using your teeth as tools. If you use your mouth to open packages, rip off a tag, or loosen a screw, there is a chance that pressure can also fracture the tooth enamel. So, you should depend on your scissors, wrench, or screwdriver for those tasks.
