Let’s go back to the basics. Sometimes our dental routine becomes a mindless habit, and teeth don’t get as clean as they should. Here are the steps to make sure you are brushing as well as you can.
The Right Brush: Be sure to choose a soft-bristled brush that reaches all areas of your mouth. Make sure the size works for your mouth, and look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure you are getting the best product. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months– sooner if it appears frayed or worn.
Toothpaste: There are specially-formulated toothpastes for sensitive teeth, teeth whitening, and other specific tasks–talk with your dentist to see which toothpaste is best for your oral health needs.
45* Angle: Place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your gums, and make short, gentle, back-and-forth strokes. These should be about tooth-wide. To clean the inner surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush at a steep vertical angle and execute multiple up-and-down strokes. Remember, a soft touch is all that’s needed! Brushing too hard can damage your enamel, your gums, and your toothbrush.
2×2: Brush for two minutes, twice a day. If you are just getting back in the habit, try playing a favorite song, or setting a timer. The habit gets easier with consistency, and the payoff is huge!
